Staff Associate (Communications), American Association for Cancer
Research, Inc., Philadelphia, PA

Position Description and Responsibilities:
- Contributes to the AACRs non-scientific publications program,
encompassing print and electronic communications vehicles.
- Contributes to the Communications Departments efforts to educate the
public about the importance of cancer research.
- Assists in writing copy for Development Department fundraising
materials.
- Assists in writing copy about recently deceased members in
collaboration with the Membership Department
- Edits and adds pages to the Content Management System forwww.aacr.org

- Prepares media reports surrounding major media efforts
(teleconferences, press releases containing multimedia materials, press
releases with significant media impact, etc.)
- Tracks AACR media citations. Compiles and distributes daily clip
report (News Updates).
- Maintains and updates databases and mailing lists.
- Compiles and verifies directly, via telephone or e-mail, contact
information for representatives of the science media, based on existing
lists and database research.
- Prepares monthly media reports for the Communications department.
- Researches and assists in drafting press releases, media advisories
and other press materials.
- Assists in handling of media inquiries and requests for interviews.
- Prepares reports of media citations received from coverage of
journal-based releases to be sent to journal editors-in-chief, AACR
leadership, and key staff members.
- Provides support to Communications Department staff in preparation for
the major meetings.
- Provides press room staffing support at major meetings.
- Assists with mailings to registered media, spokespersons, and press
briefing panelists.
- Assists with distribution of materials, including press releases, to
registered media.
- Travels to the annual meeting and one to two additional major meetings
per year to assist with meeting press events.
- Performs the essential functions of the position, and other duties as
required.

Position Requirements
- BA or BS degree
- Minimum of two 2-3 years of experience in a media and/or public
relations setting.
- Must be able to travel to annual meeting and an additional one to two
meetings per year.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of media and communications concepts.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Database management experience.
- Knowledge of data management
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Conceptual knowledge of media relations and public relations
