Public Relations Coordinator/Social Media Specialist

The George Mason University, Office of Media and Public Relations within the Office of University Relations seeks a full-time Public Relations Coordinator/Social Media Specialist.

The Coordinator's primary responsibility is to provide support to the Office of Media and Public Relations and its staff in the overall promotion of George Mason University and its faculty, staff, students, research, events and activities, both to the internal George Mason community and to local, regional and national media outlets.

The Coordinator will serve as the office's primary internal news reporter by promoting campus news and events, construction and building, University Life activities, student accomplishments and other areas as appropriate, and will help to identify stories that would be of interest to local or national media outlets. The Coordinator will achieve these objectives largely through writing articles for University Relations publications, online and print, and will provide support for the university's social media initiatives.

Other duties include assisting the Office of University Relations in developing beat- and pitch-specific editorial calendars and media lists; writing and sending out press releases, media advisories, tip sheets, expert profiles, etc.; pitching stories; responding to media queries; assisting with the coordination of special events; and working with other offices on campus when needed.

The Coordinator should have news gathering and writing experience and strong writing and editing skills. Applicants should have familiarity with and an interest in social media outlets and applications, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Foursquare.

The Coordinator should be comfortable working independently or collaborating with a team and supporting staff as needed. A solid working knowledge of the AP Style Manual is a plus. The Coordinator should also possess excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable dealing with a wide range of individuals, including students, professors, university officials, campus visitors and members of the media.

A bachelor's degree in journalism, communication or English is preferred. Applicants also should have demonstrated public relations, communications, reporting or writing work experience.
