Communications Associate, Retail Action Project, NYC

The Retail Action Project (RAP) is seeking a Communications Associate to be responsible for all strategic communications to support membership growth and advance campaigns. We need a skilled communications professional who can develop and manage online tools to connect, engage, service and grow our network of retail and fashion workers. The Communications Associate would work to increase earned media opportunities and coordinate the production of creative media to amplify the voice of NYC retail workers.
RAP is an innovative membership organization of retail and fashion workers dedicated to improving standards and opportunities for workers in the retail industry. RAP aims to develop the leadership and power of retail workers to improve the quality of retail jobs and challenge injustices in the industry. We aim to raise standards in retail through organizing, policy and legal action, while serving the immediate needs of our membership through portable services and benefits.
Description of Duties:
. Work with consultants, staff and the membership to develop an effective communications strategy that advances our campaigns and raises our industry profile
. Develop and manage online member recruitment, engagement and servicing through website development and social media
. Manage the organization's brand identity
. Oversee member and community communications, eblasts, calendars, and other materials
. Assist the development of strategic messaging for campaigns and membership programs
. Handle design and content management pertaining to websites, database integrations, social media assets and print materials
. Coordinate with staff and organizational partners in building relationships with reporters and pitching strategic media stories
. Develop and coordinate press events with the staff team and membership, including outreach to media outlets, drafting press releases, and preparing members spokespeople
. Develop and coordinate mobile technology tools for campaigns and member communications
. Design and manage traditional and online media buying
. Work with member activists to develop their media and advocacy skills and integrate members into ongoing communications projects.
Qualifications:
  • Strong computing skills including Wordpress, Facebook, Twitter, e-advocacy tools, Excel, PowerPoint and online databases.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent writing, verbal communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience in communications for social justice or political campaign.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diversity of people, organizations, communities, and cultures
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, proven ability to multitask, prioritize, problem solve and meet deadlines
  • Previous labor, community or political organizing experience.
Preferred:
  • Knowledge of media relations strategies and experience in performing pro-active media outreach; maintain good working relationships with journalists and generating positive media coverage
  • Working knowledge or expertise in HTML, CSS, and Adobe Creative Suite, Cision, and video editing skills are preferred
  • Work experience or knowledge of the retail or fashion industry.
