The Deputy Communications Director works closely with and reports to the Director of Communications, and acts as backup to the Director on long-range projects and daily execution of tasks. Due to the demands of a fast-paced, high-volume workload, the Deputy Director must be able to perform tasks at Director level when called upon to do so. The Deputy will be deeply involved in every aspect of communications activities; the ability to exercise mature judgment, flexibility and poise will be essential attributes of the successful candidate. The communications efforts of Justice at Stake, a 501(c)(3) organization, and its sister organization the Justice at Stake Campaign, a 501(c)(4) organization, will be reviewed and likely will be revised in 2013.
The successful candidate will be able to juggle multiple special projects on differing deadlines while maintaining responsibility for numerous daily operations essential to communications functions. The Deputy Communications Director has lead editorial responsibilities on several signature publications, including the widely-cited New Politics of Judicial Elections and the organization’s annual report. The Deputy Director has primary responsibility for increasing Justice at Stake’s social media communications efforts and for coordinating with the organization’s grassroots public education and advocacy efforts on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube; performs extensive internet and database research, including analyses of campaign spending; drafts news releases, web text, blog posts, newsletters and op-eds; participates in multimedia projects including videography and video editing; and assists with media outreach, including generating story ideas and pitching reporters. He or she takes a lead role in organizing Justice at Stake events, speaking at them, and coordinating activities with partner organizations.
Desired professional qualifications include seven or more years in public affairs, media, or campaign work. Bachelor’s degree required; political experience preferred. Justice at Stake is an equal opportunity employer. Women, people of color and LGBT candidates are encouraged to apply.
