Outreach, Communication and Operations Intern, Opera Lafayette, Washington, DC

Opera Lafayette's Outreach, Communication and Operations Intern works under the supervision of the General Manager to implement the company's education and communication functions, and also assists with production and general operations of the company. This opportunity provides the intern with unique hands-on experience managing projects for a growing opera company. The intern works closely with staff, the Artistic Director, and board members to ensure professional, efficient and smooth operations of the company. The intern will complete the internship with a portfolio of completed projects that demonstrate developed skills in communications and outreach, and will also gain practical experience in the day-to-day operations of a growing non-profit organization.
Hours: average 20-24 hrs/wk; may be more during production periods, less at other times
Starting Date: Immediately
Anticipated length of assignment: At least 1 semester
Position reports directly to Opera Lafayette's General Manager. Priority responsibilities include:
-Oversight and further development of a successful, existing in-school education program
-Preparation of press releases, programs, and some marketing materials for performances and events
-Over the course of the internship, gaining working knowledge of all operational aspects of company
-Assisting with logistical, transportation and production needs during rehearsal and performance periods
Qualifications:
-Interest in and basic knowledge of non-profit arts organizations
-Excellent written and oral communication skills
-Interest in or prior experience developing programs for school-aged children
-Creativity and flexibility, and ability to multi-task and work effectively under pressure
-Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and database programs
-Commitment to effectively managing and advancing the success of a well-established, growing non-profit arts organization
-The ideal applicant will be a self-starter, with some musical or operatic background (in any capacity) preferred
Job Description:
Outreach & Education
-With Artistic Director, develop in-school education programs; produce written syllabi to present to partner schools and to use in grant applications
-Communicate with partner school principals and teachers, and the Alliance Française to schedule and implement in-school education programs
-Attend and participate in in-school education programs; oversee student participation in community performances
-Manage education seminars and other community events
Communication, Marketing and Promotion
-With General Manager, develop marketing strategies and target audiences, with specific attention to grassroots marketing and social media
-Execute various marketing activities to generate ticket sales and increase earned income
-Handle public inquiries and requests; maintain telephone answering machine
-Produce press releases; manage mailing
-With Graphic Art Director and Board Communications Working Group, develop or assist with season brochure, marketing fliers, postcards and other printed images; obtain appropriate clearances
-Draft performance programs; develop and proof Playbill text; route for proofing
-Manage web site updates and redesign work with Website Manager and Graphic Art Director
Operations
-Learn and become competent in all operational systems of the company, including but not limited to box office, venue rental, contracting artists, grant-writing, production logistics, insurance, financial management and budgeting
Production
-In consultation with General Manager, liaise with artists/artist managers to obtain bios/photos/promotional materials, housing/travel information, and other necessary communications
-In consultation with General Manager and Housing/Artist Relations Coordinators, ensure adequate lodging and transportation coverage; create snow emergency plan when necessary
-Attend all rehearsals and performances to assist Artistic Director, General Manager, and Stage Manager as necessary
-Assist with artist transportation
Other duties
-Attend board, committee, and working group meetings as needed
-Other duties as assigned
The direct supervisor of the Outreach, Communication and Operations Intern is the General Manager. It is hoped, though not guaranteed, that this position may grow into a salaried staff position at the conclusion of the internship.
