Communications Intern at GM (various locations)

Communication interns work together on a group project. This summer, GM interns planned and executed an event that introduced interns from local media outlets - television, lifestyle magazines and car enthusiast media - to GM's newest Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Chevrolet Communications

Founded in Detroit in 1911, Chevrolet celebrates its centennial as a global automotive brand with annual sales of about 4.25 million vehicles in more than 140 countries. This marketing communications intern will assist the divisional communications team with various activities that promote key vehicles and support summer launch events including brand strategy; creating awareness and consideration with key audiences, including the youth market (18-25); and participating in brainstorming and execution.

o Support vehicle launch planning and related media activities

o Media outreach to support brand activities

o Assist with various conference sponsorship activities

o Media materials development http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/chevrolet/news.html

o Social web engagement activities including the @Chevrolet related Twitter accounts and Facebook pages http://www.facebook.com/chevrolet

o Write posts for various Chevrolet and GM blogs

GM News Operations

General Motors has many professionals who help to manage and extend the reach of its news every day. The corporate News Operations Team is GM's center of expertise and assists their communications colleagues. This news loving intern will rotate through and assist the corporate, broadcast; news bureau, consumer affairs and social media teams to tell GM and its divisional brand "stories" throughout the summer.

- Creatively tell GM's "stories" through its social web channels
- Engage with consumers via social media especially through the @GM Twitter and General Motors Facebook http://www.facebook.com/generalmotors channels
- Extend the reach of the news by writing FastLane blog posts http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/
- Write releases or other content for the media site http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/news.html
- Assist broadcast team with video shoots, story development and media pitching
- Organize and lead a corporate news activity
- Assist Consumer Affairs lead at a regional news event
- Extend the reach of GM's news by creating a plan to reach college campus news outlets

o Provide assistance with various news announcements and events

Manufacturing and Labor Relations Communications

Work at a metro Detroit manufacturing facility and coordinate with other facilities on key vehicle launches in summer '12. This motivated intern will assist Plant Communications Managers and GM communications professionals to educate employees, the media and the community about GM manufacturing plants. This position provides diverse experiences including:

o Develop and implement internal and external communication strategies to launch new products, including a strong focus on manufacturing technology and quality messages

o Plan and execute special events, including plant-specific media events, community grassroots events or political visits

o Contribute to reputational campaigns, including the UAW-GM Facebook initiative https://www.facebook.com/#!/uawgm.org

o Help plan and host a Simulated Workplace Environment event for lifestyle media http://www.facesofgm.com/2011/04/15/learning-lessons-on-the-line/

o Provide communication counsel (message creation, speech writing and presentation development) to GM's manufacturing leadership

o Manage employee/community ride-and-drive events

Qualifications

Seeking students currently working on an undergraduate or graduate degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or Marketing.

Good oral and written communication skills

High level of analytical ability where problems are complex

Interpersonal skills to work effectively with others

Preferred cumulative GPA 3.0

Right to work in U.S. without visa sponsorship

Job assignments will be located in metro Detroit
May involve some travel
