POSITION SUMMARY

Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN) seeks a part-time (20 hours per week) Press Secretary/Public Affairs Officer with superior media relations and writing skills to implement comprehensive media activities of the organization.  SWAN seeks a self-starter, who is committed to effectively promoting SWAN, its goals and objectives and experts in U.S. Top Tier news media.  A commitment to accuracy and details, combined with superior writing skills is essential.  This position includes a myriad of communications activities: spokesperson, research, tracking, analysis, media database maintenance, writing, editing, and media relations. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
 Ø Serve as a SWAN spokesperson, know SWAN messages and articulate these messages to national and local media.
Ø Pitch print, television, radio, and digital media outlets and book SWAN experts on targeted issues.
Ø Write media pitches, press advisories, news releases, reports, memoranda, talking points and other press materials.
Ø Research target markets.
Ø Plan and implement media activities to promote organization, projects, and build SWAN on-line presence and lists.
Ø Prepare organizational spokespersons for media interviews, including talking points and background materials.
Ø  Field media requests, book and manage logistics for SWAN press interviews – sometimes on tight and/or off-hour deadlines.
Ø Develop and maintain media databases.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ø Excellent writing skills. 
Ø Proven ability to develop, research and generate written materials based on complex policy and government issues.   
Ø Strong understanding of news cycle.
Ø Versatile self-starter, with strong intellect and total reliability.
Ø Interest in military service women’s issues, preferred.
Ø Web, on-line and social media knowledge and savvy.
Ø Commitment to team work.
Ø Familiarity with word processing, database programs (Vocus), internet research and spreadsheet programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Ø Master’s degree preferred, in communications, public policy, political science or related field.
Ø At least two years experience as a communications professional.
Ø Experience working in public policy or with the military/veterans preferred.
Ø Established contacts with media organizations.

SUPERVISION
 The Press Secretary/Public Affairs Officer reports to the Executive Director, Service Women’s Action Network.
