The mission of UC Berkeley’s Office of Public Affairs is to enhance communications and relationships with UC Berkeley’s many constituents. These include faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, parents, visitors, the media, industry, research sponsors, other educators, the general public and government leaders at all levels. With the creative use of diverse communications strategies, the Office of Public Affairs conveys the quality, diversity, vitality, preeminence and dedication to service of UC Berkeley. In turn, Public Affairs provides feedback to the university from these many audiences.
The Social Media editor position works closely with all areas of Public Affairs and amplifies our messages through social media tools.
Responsibilities:
Develop and execute social media strategies for news, information and public relations to key UC Berkeley audiences such as the media, the general public, and students, staff and faculty. Builds audience base for content delivered via social media. Utilize tools/metrics to gauge effectiveness of efforts and adjusts accordingly.
Independently carries out special projects, either short- or long-term, including leading digital and social media efforts for Public Affairs, and assists others in Public Affairs with projects, breaking news situations such as protests and emergencies, and other assignments as needed. Posts Twitter messages and manages central Facebook site for campus news and other social media outlets. Supports other web and media strategies using social media tools. Writes online NewsCenter stories on a wide variety of topics. Maintains level of writing standards associated with UC Berkeley’s Office of Public Affairs. Handles highly confidential materials that have an impact on the campus; these may include embargoed news releases, sensitive data, and confidential correspondence. Maintains strict confidentiality.
Qualifications:
· Solid knowledge of concepts and principles of digital media and social media strategies, metrics and tactics.
· News, media communications, public relations and/or media relations background.
· Basic knowledge of the campus, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure.
· Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen.
· Time management and organizational skills.
· Knowledge of current social media tools and ability to creatively apply tools to reach UC Berkeley's outreach goals.
· Skill to maintain confidentiality.
· Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
