Media Strategist at GLAAD, New York, NY

Position Summary
GLAAD's Media Strategist is a combination of media strategist, campaigner and public relations professional who is vital to GLAAD's role as an agent of culture change. The Media Strategist will have the responsibility of amplifying the voices of LGBT people through media and online organizing campaigns. The Media Strategist is also responsible for monitoring and responding to print, broadcast and online media as it pertains to GLAAD's mission.
Responsibilities
  • Plans, writes, edits, and proofs written materials to include press releases, action alerts, emails to media professionals, blog posts and other documents as needed
  • Develops and media trains spokespeople for campaigns and issue areas; pitches stories to the media
  • Develops and maintains relationships with local organizations, advocates and leaders; connects local activists and individuals with GLAAD’s campaign work
  • Maintains and grows current contacts, or access to contacts/spokespeople, for LGBT and mainstream media outlets and journalists
  • Conducts research and writes reports when needed
  • Monitors the media for instances of defamation, responds to incident reports, and works with editors and networks to address issues of defamation as they arise
  • Represents GLAAD on coalitions and campaigns for LGBT equality when needed (e.g., a state marriage campaign, a local nondiscrimination campaign)
  • Monitors public opinion data and media coverage in order to support the development of effective messaging for specific campaigns and situations
  • Coordinates the Commentator Accountability Project with outside consultant
  • Completes other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
  • Required: 3+ years of experience in media or communications or equivalent line of work
  • Required: BA degree, preferably in journalism, communications, public relations, LGBT studies or other relevant field
  • Strongly Preferred: Experience in LGBT advocacy or media advocacy
  • Follows LGBT news closely and well-versed in LGBT issues; strong understanding of transgender issues a plus
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, professional email and phone manner
  • Experience writing blog posts, press releases, action alerts
  • Excellent research skills
  • Understanding of tailoring messaging to multiple audiences
  • Understanding of social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Experience monitoring media and tracking issues
  • Experience developing and maintaining relationships with individuals with a wide variety of backgrounds, organizations, and media contacts
  • Leadership skills and experience
  • Professional demeanor and appearance
  • Microsoft Office experience
  • Preferred: experience with media and/or online organizing campaigns
  • Interest in sports a plus
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and desire to be a self-starter
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Willingness to travel if needed
