Director of Communications, Change.org

Director of Communications

Change.org is seeking a Director of Communications to oversee all press and external communications.
Change.org is the fastest growing platform for social change on the web, gaining more than 150,000 new members a month and pioneering a new model of collective action that empowers anyone, anywhere, to start their own social action campaigns to change their community, city, or country.
Every day, real change occurs because of campaigns started on Change.org – from passing local recycling ordinances to reinstating teachers fired for being gay to preventing human trafficking online. The mission of the Director of Communications will be to tell the story of Change.org’s unique model of empowerment to the press, promote the most compelling campaigns started on the site in partnership with our world-class organizing team, and establish Change.org as the central platform for social change on the web.
Change.org is a profitable social venture with more than 30 employees located in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York City. We prefer applicants based in one of these cities. Compensation and benefits are very competitive.
The Director of Communications will:
  • Oversee all national media outreach on Change.org campaigns and advise our organizing and editorial teams on local and regional media outreach and strategy.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive PR and communications plan, with a specific emphasis on promoting campaigns started by Change.org members, partners, and staff.
  • Organize press briefings, cause and campaign-specific press events, and media sessions.
  • Build on well-established contacts with print and broadcast media and influential online outlets and bloggers.
  • Identify the most viable campaign press opportunities and execute on garnering earned media.
  • Create and maintain excellent systems for tracking and reporting media placement and contacts.
  • Protect and enhance the reputation of Change.org with attention to developing, differentiating, and raising the profile of the Change.org brand.
Candidates must be entrepreneurial self-starters excited to work with an ambitious, fast-moving team focused on organizing and winning campaigns across the country and the world. We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated success in attracting national media attention as well as the ability to smoothly manage the most senior of media relations.
Experience in the nonprofit, political, or advocacy sector as well as experience in the consumer internet sector is preferred, though not required. Regardless of experience, we are looking for a passionate, hard-working, organized, and detailed-oriented person who has excellent interpersonal skills and wants to be part of a growing organization working to change the world.
To apply, please send a brief introductory email and your resume (or a link to your LinkedIn profile) to communicationsdirector@change.org.
