Description:
The 1.3 million member United Food Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), a powerful voice for working men and women, is seeking a Campaign Communications Specialist to contribute to the implementation of comprehensive and diversified strategic media and messaging programs to support UFCW organizing objectives and enhance UFCW identity through local, regional and national exposure. This position is also available to assist in other communications areas of the department as assigned. This is an entry level position whose functions support field activities, primarily on location with very little notice, and require the exercise of discretion in the development and implementation of department programs.

Duties:
Help develop and implement a strategic messaging and print media outreach program through the Wake Up Wal-Mart Campaign on behalf of the Organizing Department.

Work closely with key individuals in UFCW regions and local unions as well as and other UFCW departments relevant to UFCW growth.

Develop effective working relationships with reporters and media outlets, and learn how to exercise judgment in dealing with incoming media requests to determine priorities and how to respond.

Assist in analyzing print, broadcast and online media coverage for trends that would influence our strategies. Learn how to exercise expert judgment in identifying media opportunities or inquiries and learn how to develop strategic, and timely responses.

Implement cohesive strategies for specific Wake Up Wal-Mart print media campaign including, but not limited to, writing and preparing, as assigned, articles, newsletters, fliers, brochures, news releases, letters, reports, web print materials for the Wake Up Wal-Mart campaign.

Prepare communications materials related to the Wake Up Wal-Mart campaign.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Work involves frequent and last minute travel, temporary relocation and irregular and/or unpredictable hours.


Additional Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline. Equivalent experience may be substituted. Minimum of one year experience in writing, editing and working with the media. An understanding of the principles and practices of communications acquired with one year of experience. Familiarity with principles of the labor movement is desired, but not required.

Ability to write, prepare and edit in a creative and clear manner under direct supervision at a level acquired with one year experience. Good oral communication skills. Good listening and interpersonal skills. The ability to exercise discretion is required.

An understanding of on-line communications, word processing and graphic design software acquired with one year of experience is required. Web site development is a plus.

The ability to organize time efficiently, meet deadlines and work under pressure is required. The ability to travel frequently and at the last minute is required.

The ability to work irregular or unpredictable hours and temporarily relocate is required.
