The Active Transportation Alliance (formerly the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation) works to make conditions better for people who bicycle or walk, thereby making Chicagoland a better place to live, work, and play. Active Trans believes that whether people bike or walk for exercise, to work, or for fun, they should do it enjoyably. But each day, the region's bike riders and walkers contend with problems such as heavy traffic, careless drivers, and bad pavement. Since 1985, the Active Transportation Alliance has worked to attack not only these problems, but also the policies that favor automobile transportation at all costs. A non-profit corporation, Active Trans has its headquarters in downtown Chicago.
PURPOSE & GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Active Transportation Alliance has been hired to implement the Chicago Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) Pedestrian Safety Initiative. The purpose of Chicago’s Pedestrian Safety Initiative is to reduce the number and severity of vehicle-pedestrian crashes with a focus on two highly affected populations – children and seniors.
The main objectives of the Pedestrian Program Assistant are to implement a senior pedestrian safety project and to aid the Pedestrian Program Coordinator and Safe Routes Ambassadors Manager in the planning, maintenance and evaluation of their respective programs and projects. Duties include conducting senior pedestrian safety workshops, and establishing a program for improved senior pedestrian safety citywide. Additionally the Program Assistant will be responsible for coordinating the logistics of the Mayor’s Pedestrian Advisory Council meetings, including coordinating the public awareness sidewalk snow removal campaign. The Program Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Pedestrian Program Coordinator and the Safe Routes Ambassadors Coordinator on projects as needed.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP & WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Program Assistant will generally work 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday, during business hours. The Program Assistant will be located at the CDOT offices, 30 N. LaSalle, working off-site and on evenings and weekends as needed. The Program Assistant will report to the CDOT Pedestrian Program Coordinator.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Assistant duties include:
· Conduct senior pedestrian safety workshops and develop expanded project goals by analyzing crash data, crash trends and senior mobility barriers
· Create/update/print safety publications and program website as necessary
· Coordinate Mayor’s Pedestrian Advisory Council meetings
· Coordinate the Sidewalk Snow Removal Public Awareness campaign
· Assist the Pedestrian Safety Initiative as needed
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS
· Commitment to senior advocacy
· Commitment to walking and bicycling as a means of transportation and recreation
· Ability to excel in a team-oriented environment
· Dedication to advocacy for non-motorized transportation
· Experience in establishing professional working relationships with outside organizations
· Strong writing skills
· Problem solving skills and the ability to formulate and implement creative strategies
· Ability to communicate well with people of all ages, abilities, cultural groups, economic statuses, and sexual orientations
· Excellent time management skills
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience with curriculum development
· Program management and budget experience
· Experience teaching pedestrian or bicycle safety education
· Knowledge of Chicago’s pedestrian and bicycle environment
· Knowledge of GIS
· Proficiency in Spanish
SALARY
$32,000 - $36,000 depending on experience
